A 3-day STEP Maths Preparation Course for students sitting PAT, ENGAA, NSAA, or similar exams for entry to Oxford or Cambridge. Takes place in July, at the start of the summer holidays.
In this course, we survey PAT physics questions on a variety of topics, useful for preparing for PAT, ENGAA or NSAA.
Some topics covered by PAT, ENGAA, and NSAA may not yet have been taught in school. Moreover, university interviewers can choose to ask questions on any of them, so it is wise to be familiar with the theory. For this reason, our Physics Summer Course aims to bring you up to scratch with all of the commonly occurring subject matter that could be examined through one of these tests or at interview.
We revise some material and introduce some new topics. In each section, we cover the basics with A-level questions, and then test its application in past PAT questions and other challenging questions from outside sources.
These pre-interview exams often require you to do some work without a calculator, so we make a point of practising swift and error-free calculation by hand. We also cover some principles that are not explicitly covered at A-level, such as the square-cube law, which is very commonly referenced in admissions tests and interviews.
- Static forces
- The behaviour of moving bodies studied via dynamics and kinematics
- The special case of circular motion and its application to orbits
- The behaviour of electrical circuits governed by resistors, electrical power, and more exotic components like capacitors and diodes
- The physics of waves and intensity, and especially electromagnetic radiation
- Electric charge, electric potential energy, and electrostatic forces
- Radioactive decay
- Springs and elasticity
- General physically-applicable reasoning, including the square-cube law
