A 1-day STEP Maths Preparation Course for students sitting entrance exams for entry to Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Warwick, Imperial College, or other universities. Takes place in July, at the start of the summer holidays.
If you have your sights set on a mathematics degree at a top university, you are likely to have to take an entrance exam such as MAT, TMUA, or CSAT. In this course, we will guide you through a selection of novel questions and past questions from older admissions tests, intended to be useful even for those who have seen all readily available past questions. You will have a chance to work through specially-selected questions in cooperation with some of your fellow applicants. A solution to each question will be presented succinctly and with full explanation by an expert tutor in order to demonstrate the quickest or surest technique and why it was chosen.
The skills and topics we will cover include:
- Justifying and qualifying inferences
- Iterating and composing functions
- Using inequalities and estimates
- Managing higher order polynomials
- Sketching unfamiliar graphs
What our students said:
“It was very good doing lots of questions that both challenged us and allowed them to be approached in different ways, which lead to deeper discussions about the maths behind them. I really enjoyed that aspect of the course. I also liked how we swapped seats every now and then to meet new people.”
“I found the course very useful as it challenged me and my maths skills more than I’ve ever been challenged before. It improved my ability to break down questions and then be able to implement skills I’ve already learnt.”
“I became more confident in sketching complicated graphs, which has helped me feel better prepared for my test and interview.”
