Description
A 1-day STEP Maths Preparation Course for students sitting ECAA or similar exams for entry to Cambridge or other universities. Takes place in August.
Please note that the running of this course is subject to demand. Bookings will be refunded if there is not enough demand to run the course.
If you are applying to take Economics at Cambridge, you will need to take the ECAA (Economics Admissions Assessment) before your interview. ECAA contains a substantial mathematics component, in the format of short, multiple-choice questions. Familiarity with both the format and common topics will give you a significant advantage in this part.
In this course, we will guide you through a selection of novel questions and past questions from older admissions tests, intended to be useful even for those who have seen all readily available past questions. You will have a chance to work through specially-selected questions in cooperation with some of your fellow applicants. A solution to each question will be presented succinctly and with full explanation by an expert tutor in order to demonstrate the quickest or surest technique and why it was chosen.
The skills and topics we will cover include:
- Learning to unpack and analyse logical statements – this skill is often necessary to grasp what some questions are even asking and is stressed more in ECAA and other admissions tests than at A-level.
- Handling polynomials of degree higher than a quadratic – these functions are much more common in entrance exams than at A-level, but also require a different set of tricks to analyse.
- Analysing unfamiliar functions – you will often be confronted with familiar functions combined in unusual ways, since this is a frequently required skill in ECAA, and also afterwards at interview.
